Love is stronger than Fear - Not for sensitive readers

I don't know why we always let ourselves be caught with the emotional blackmail - "If you can't take this horse/dog/cat then it will have to be put down". But this is exactly how I was caught...
I received a phone call from my very first riding teacher to tell me that one of her other students had this rescue… Continue

The inexplicable compulsion

Since I can first recall the feeling of wanting, longing for, yearning after - it was for a horse of my own!

Whenever we went visiting my grandparents on the farm, I would spend the whole day waiting for the horses to arrive for their feed in the evening. But seeing them wasn't enough. I needed to be near them, stroke them, touch them. Unfortunately, these were not pleasure horses who had been kindly convinced of human friendship; these were tough, strong, working horses who were only ever hand… Continue

Trials & Tribulation

Schooling a young horse with no help from the ground at all is never a good idea. Schooling a horse who is presenting with nervous tension is even worse. Add a badly fitting saddle into the mix, and you have a recipe for disaster. Having no money to replace the ill-fitting saddle or get the needed lessons does… Continue

The Chapter of "Firsts"

Anyone who owns a horse, rides a horse for someone else, or is in any way involved with horses will know that it takes hard, hard work to train a young horse into a fine competition horse, or even just a fun hack.

Since I had already lost almost six precious months, BB (as Babaki Bear was now affectionately known) and I started working right away. She was one of the easiest youngsters I had ever had the pleasure of teaching to lunge and backing. She just GOT it.

First Ride… Continue

Making dreams reality

I have arrived! I'm walking around at the show and people ask me how I'm doing. I may not be competing today, but I'm getting to know the various riders and their mounts and who did what last time. I feel a golden wave rush over me as I realise this. My word, I am happy! I wonder how many other people have consciously had to take this journey and whether for most of them it just-sort-of-happened?

All the work, dreams, tears, frustration, injuries and money did pay off. I feel like I have arrive… Continue

Just read your blog post and then tried to read it to my daughter but couldn't - she had to read it herself while I took deep breaths and dried my eyes. Oh, do I know where you are from every aspect but now well on my way to over the hill I have discoverd that success in the competition arena is there only that others may see that you have succeeded in a very superficial way and that true horsey success lies purely in your relationship with your horse. That your horse wants to be with you as much as you want to be with your horse and the quiet moments of total comfort in each others company - this is far more rewarding in the greater scheme of things than the red rossettes that were achieved accompanied by the stress of the show ring environment.

You will probabably never lose your urge to have your own horse - it is truly a terminal illness - and an honour and a privilege to have such a creature in our lives
